Recent news

David Icke.

In our research we looked a David Icke due to his views on the human race and reptiles, which is relevant to our song.
Just recently we were browsing the online newspapers and we came across this news article about his sellout tour and recent controversy.

Our Community.

I also stumbled across an article about communities in America reworking propaganda to help counteract the bad decisions made by the government.

I think this is relevant because it helps highlight the popularity of propaganda and the use of it in the modern society.

Feedback

I posted my work onto a photography & graphics forum, as I don't have Facebook. So I could get some feedback on my work, here are some examples of the comments received.

This comment referenced on the likeness of my work to russian propaganda which I'm really pleased about because propaganda was my main influence.

This comment especially pleased me because Alexander Rodchenko propaganda was the main influence for my poster.

This comment interested me because I've noticed this with the font myself, I do think it looks good but this might be something I want to sort out, to avoid confusion. (see below)

This comment I can understand because the photograph might not be understood, especially if the audience aren't aware of my propaganda influence.

Propaganda.

To continue with my propaganda inspiration I have decided to look at some Soviet Propaganda.
In this post I will include some examples of soviet artwork and a brief explanation.

Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position so as to benefit oneself or one's group.

Wall posters were widely used in the early days, often depicting the Red Army's triumphs for the benefit of those who cannot read, throughout the 1920s, this was continued and carried on into World War II and consisted of bold simple designs.
The posters are designed to burn an image into the minds of the people, that after a while would come to be accepted as an undeniable truth.

We'll execute the plan of the great works.

Thousands of hands are raised voting "yes." The theme of this poster is conformity, it defines what others are doing and forces an individual to question their position.

Have You Enlisted In the Army?

A solider bluntly questioning the Russian male audience about his contribution to the defense of the October Revolution

Glory to the mighty air force of the country of the Socialism.

This is a post designed to show an inspiring picture of force and mass to be considered a good vehicle to promote confidence, self-righteousness and feel good about being part of the good guys' crowd.

Franz Ferdinand.

Franz Ferdinand are a very well known band that use propaganda inspired artwork for their album covers.

I think propaganda is a great theme to have for artwork as its generally an everyday part of life, although it may be more covalent, we do tend to see various signs of propaganda around.
Its also quite an interesting top and quite controversial, Franz Ferdinand have designed their albums so that if you don't know about the links with propaganda, you would probably just think its a good design!

Inspiration.

Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse that devastated the in-game world.
The character is an inhabitant of Vault 101, a survival shelter designed to protect paying humans from the nuclear war. When the character's father disappears mysteriously, the player is forced to escape from the Vault and journey into the ruins of the wasteland to find him safe.

I've played this game and the sequel and the in game story and images have inspired me in my media project. I like the use of propaganda style posters and images, the game is based in a time after the expiration of the world and the world came to be how it is via nuclear fallout due to countries falling out and political disaster.
As me and matt have been inspired by Lupe Fiasco's political video I think this is something we would like to include in our video, and more specifically I would like to feature some wartime propaganda in my print work.

Because the games events have a political cause there is a lot of propaganda style posters in the game which I really like! So I definitely want to go along this route with my advert and CD cover.

Bioshock 1/2.

BioShock is a first-person shooter video game developed by 2K Boston BioShock is set during 1960, in Rapture, a fictional underwater dystopia city; its history is revealed to the player through in-game audio recordings scattered throughout the game. The underwater city was envisioned by Andrew Ryan, a successful business tycoon, his vision for the city was as a utopia to avoid the social oppression of the government and religion in the upper world.

Scientific progress flourished within Rapture after the discovery of a new form of sea slug by Dr. Bridgette Tenenbaum; stem cells from the slugs could be used to create ADAM, a plasmid that altered its user's DNA and grant them super-human powers like telekinesis and pyrogenesis.

An industry for plasmids was created by Tenenbaum and Fontaine. To meet the growing demand, Tenenbaum devised a means for the sea slugs to be embedded in the stomachs of young girls from Fontaine's orphanages, named Little Sisters, producing large quantities of ADAM.

As plasmid use grew, a class division arose. Fontaine launched a war against Ryan using an army of plasmid-enhanced soldiers, but was apparently killed in the fight.
Ultimately a complete breakdown of Rapture's society occurred on New Year's Eve of 1959
The resulting war left few survivors. Those that remained alive barricaded themselves in isolated areas of Rapture, while the remaining civilians, having become deranged over time due to heavy ADAM use, wander Rapture looking for more ADAM to consume.

Because of the era in which the game was set the posters in game are similar to that of what I would hope to create myself for my print work, a wartime propaganda style. I am using these particular images to help influence my print work myself.

This is a quick mock-up of a propaganda style album cover I did for our album cover.

Entropy + Redundancy.

Redundancy.

Redundancy is what is predictable or conventional in a message, it is the result of high predictability.

I feel for a girl band this image is very redundant, the image is of the artists in sexualised poses, this is redundant because its very predictable, to show how predictable this image can be, I've included some more examples.

Entropy.

Entropy is what is unpredictable in a message.

A picture of a rose would normally be considered to be very redundant, however by changing the image, we can make it more entropic, here is a beautiful photograph of a rose edited into different colours, although the  rose is redundant, the colours on the rose are very entropic and are what is unpredictable in the message.

Subjective?
If the below album art was for a girl band it would be considered very entropic, as it does not fit in with the conventions of the genre, however on hearing that the band is an indie rock band, the image immediately becomes more redundant, as it is something we would expect from an indie rock band.
